“Radio Witham, one of my proudest missions” by instigator and founder, Gwen Barker (nee Hullah); as featured within, She And The Cat’s Mother Monthly Recollections eMagazine (January 2022 | issue 003);

// START of text:

“Being the instigator of Radio Witham, Grantham Hospital’s Radio Station, which took two years of research to gaining support of Matron, Mrs Hutchinson and the League of Friends; thereafter, three months trial, leading officially to the opening by-way of intercepting into the BBC; British Broadcasting Corporation (approved in 1976);

“as interviewer and broadcaster, later station manager, my favourite well-known people who visited Grantham were Quintin Hogg QC waspishly witty; Ken Dodd comedian and singer/songwriter a little vulgar to start with; Willie Rushton writer/actor droll, easy to talk to; and last but not least, Margaret Thatcher then the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party when she did a flying visit back to her home town after many, many years;

“the lady kindly gave me three minutes to interview her (reel to reel recorder); she had Bank Holiday blue eyes, small manoeuvring hands, glamorous legs with well turned ankles her voice, I also remember was a trifle high. Denis, meanwhile, looked at me as though I was a damp baby!”

Keith Mothersdale’s lightning FAST fibre broadband from a garden shed in Yorkshire Dales

Here is the typed text by Gwen Hullah, titled, “Leaving a scorch mark 9,421 megabits per second all from a garden shed in the Yorkshire Dales”; as featured within, She And The Cat’s Mother Monthly Recollections eMagazine (January 2022 | issue 003);

// START of text:

Frustrated by the slow internet connection in the Ribble Valley, Keith Mothersdale (KM) a resident a semi-retired telecommunications expert, vowed to drag Rathmell villagers (population 305) into the 21st century;

The innovation came about when KM upgraded his own home connection making it 194 times faster than the national average, and more than 83,000 times speedier than the slowest in the country KM’s connection is so powerful that when he first tired it out in his home office, his desktop computer started smoking, leaving a scorch mark on the wooden table; motivating him to move his office into the garden shed;

Many rural areas are reliant on broadband coming down copper phone lines, and the village people felt strongly, they were ignored and abandoned by the major broadband providers; to such a degree, KM and a neighbour contacted not-for-profit provider Broadband 4, The Rural North (B4RN) based in nearby Melling; they offered to bring speeds of 1,000 megabits to Rathmell if villagers could raise £85,000 which took two weeks to raise;

Whereupon, a fibre optic cable was brought to the boundary of each home via a box placed opposite the village reading room; stipulation to get the connection, the house-holders had to take on the job of getting it into their homes;

A source said: “KM and other villagers dug trenches for well over two years, digging under dry stonewalls and across the countryside” no job for anyone with a glass back!

The connection costs the villagers of Rathmell £30 a month;

Keith Mothersdale said: “… all the broadband advertising describing lightning fast fibre broadband then you see at the bottom of the screen speeds up 65Mb. Well after a bit more testing of my home broadband and thanks to my amazing internet service provider (B4RN) here in the rural North I managed 9,421Mb download and 7,278Mb upload. See below speed test. Now that is lightning fast fibre broadband.”

Transcript of episode 1: “Can you START a PATREON without a following? YES!” our Patreon Diaries series by She And The Cat’s Mother

As published within, She And The Cat’s Mother MONTHLY Recollections eMagazine (November 2021 | issue 001);

// START of transcript:

If, like us at She And The Cat’s Mother, you are PUT OUT, PUT OFF, from starting a Patreon page because you’ve heard:

  • You DON’T have enough FOLLOWERS
  • You DON’T have enough TIME
  • You DON’T have enough CONTENT

Well, DON’T be discouraged, instead take courage; because, YES! You can START a Patreon without a following and here is how!

Chances are, if you’ve pressed play for this video; you’ve asked the ask:

“When should I start a Patreon? And do I need a following before starting a Patreon page?”

The advice we’ve found from other Patreon creators is you MUST have a following before starting your Patreon page;

WHY? It’s worth noting:

Patreon is set-up (at least at the time of recording this video) to be a landing platform – people are to discover you elsewhere, online and offline – then, if they like you enough, you funnel them to your Patreon page;

Patreon is NOT designed to be, or compete, as just another social media channel – it is different!

We heard about Patreon through the “BBC Media Show” in the summer of 2021, just at a time when we were looking for something that was as different as different can be – compared to other business outlets for content creators;

At the time, we had completed a trilogy of sketch shows promoting our newest guidebook release, all about how-to Raffle Property; [cue video trilolgy montage] welcome back;

Well, if, like us, you are at first PUT OUT, PUT OFF, from starting a Patreon page because you’ve heard:

  • You DON’T have enough FOLLOWERS;
  • You DON’T have enough TIME;
  • You DON’T have enough CONTENT;

And are, instead encouraged to go away and:

1. concentrate on growing a sizeable following;

2. plan how to divide your time fairly between your social media and Patreon (without neglecting or diluting any of your content for your followers);

3. think with care what content is worthy to gift your paying members at Patreon;

Well DON’T be discouraged, instead take courage!

BECAUSE; here is the BIG question:

“How many followers do you need to start a Patreon page and what if, you DON’T have that size of following?”

The number of FOLLOWERS recommended BEFORE you start a Patreon page is, 25,000 – WHY?

Because you should be looking to convert 1 in 100 of your current followers across to your Patreon page; this would give you 250 patrons, a start towards being financially self-supportive;

Now, you may believe you’ll be able to convert MORE than 1 in 100 followers; but this method is used in many advertisement campaigns, and if you’re familiar with creating your own ads on social media; 1 in 100 is often used to measure whether an ad is successful enough to keep running or be stopped;

To paraphrase: you should do something 100 times to gain 1 result you are seeking, this is a successful campaign;

If, like us, you’ve made a calculation of your followers across ALL your social media and online outlets and have fallen short of the MAGIC number “25,000” here is our proposal:

“Do what others say CAN’T be done!”

There is no time like now time, and time is the one thing you can’t buy and you can’t get back!

It’s time to go BACK TO BASICS

We plan to create our Patreon page as a means to re-focus our efforts and re-launch ourselves!

If, like us at, She And The Cat’s Mother, you’ve found yourself, spreading yourself and your message too thin, over multiple online sites, far better to START building a Patreon page; where all your creations can live and blossom, and; start using your other media outlets as a support tool for your Patreon page, so they can ALL grow together!

This is a permission ticket, from us to you, take it with both hands – it’s time to give ourselves permission to break the rules, NOT to take NO for an answer!

It won’t be easy, but together, with re-focus and action, surely we, and you, can make our own difference!

Can you name that guitar chord: C shape two FRETS down?

As featured within, She And The Cat’s Mother Monthly Recollections eMagazine (January 2022 | issue 003); INSIGHT: selecting song, “Time” by Ida Barker

// START of text:

A song of friendship was at the forefront of my mind when choosing a signature tune for the character of Miss Penopause; the alter-ego and writing inspiration of Alice;

together, these two characters are at the heart of this Looking-glass story; Miss Penopause, cannot write due to an affliction of pausing too long, enabling Alice to write without pause, meaning the lyrics:

“I’m relying on you”;

within the choruses of “Time” was a grand fit when Miss Penopause sings to Alice within this extended musical storytime of: Alice Returns Through The Looking-Glass;

“Time”  sparked the beginnings of my songwriting; the first complete song I ever wrote; and the only one, from over 100 of my compositions that includes the chord:

D add 9 add 11;

if you’re unfamiliar to this chord, you may recognised it as the shape of C, two frets down on the guitar (alternatively, C shaped on the third fret);

once I’d written 20+ songs it felt time to start performing in front of an audience. Half my repertoire was finger-picking songs (like “Time”) others, more upbeat, with a couple of choppy-blu numbers;

local open mic nights was were we began; mum, scoured the listing pages for events, (she was my manager, booking agent and roadie from the get-go); while I set-to writing more of the kind of songs audiences responded best to;

within six months of open mics at venues including, The Bell, Driffield, and Broadacres, Bridlington, it was time to start looking forward to supporting main artists at places such as The Railway, Cottingham and Springhead, Kingston-Upon-Hull.
